Council to help vignerons

29 Nov, 2000 09:23 AM
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s decision to establish a special wine industry working group will help local vignerons establish their businesses, according to Mayor Phil Yeo.

Mr Yeo said Council was very supportive of the development of the wine industry in the Southern Highlands.

“We meet fairly regularly with local vignerons mainly to develop policies and looking at ways to streamline the development application process,” he said.

Mr Yeo said he thought the idea of wine trails was a great initiative and said the wine industry was also important in providing local employment.

“We are very much aware of the environment and at this stage there doesn’t seem to be any environmental downsides,” he said.

Mr Yeo said the special Council working group had been established to develop a degree of expertise on vineyards and the wine industry within Council.

“We see this as a positive initiative which is designed to help local vignerons particularly in speeding things up for them.”
