Wingecarribee Shire Council will consider introducing water restrictions tonight as the drought shows little sign of easing.
Cr Larry Whipper has given notice of his intention to move the motion as a prudent measure in light of the worsening drought and the continued need for water to fight bushfires.
At this stage he is only talking about low level restrictions which may avoid the need for more severe restrictions at a later date.
The restrictions would probably involve the banning of fixed hoses and sprinklers between the hours of 10am and 6pm and a total ban on the hosing down of surfaces such as concrete footpaths and paved areas.
"A number of people in the community have approached me and other councillors and asked why we have no restrictions, especially when they take offence at people hosing down during the day," he said.
"Most people want to do the right thing and I'm only talking about low level restrictions to start with. Normally we wait for Sydney to impose restrictions before we do but in this case I think there is a need to adopt prudence."
Council's technical services manager Charles Dunlop said council's two dams at Bundanoon Creek and Medway have sufficient stored water not to warrant imposing restrictions.
"However, in the past council has followed the practice that when Sydney Water imposes restrictions, council has followed suit and imposed restrictions on Wingecarribee Shire," he said. "Consequently, staff are monitoring the Sydney situation and will advise council accordingly."
