Council settles for less

27 Mar, 2006 07:13 AM
Wingecarribee Shire Council has accepted $492,330 from Woolworths' Mittagong Marketplace developer Fabcot Pty Ltd - less than a third of the amount offered by the company in October.

Council voted in closed session on Wednesday to accept the offer, after considering legal advice and a report from a Land and Environment Court-appointed traffic expert.

Wingecarribee Shire Council had sought $2.77 million towards road intersection upgrades, footpath upgrades, and infrastructure costs as conditions of consent for the Big W development.

Fabcot appealed to the Land and Environment Court after council turned down a compromise offer of $1.64 million.

The offer included funding for two sets of traffic signals, formation of Roscoe Street, footpaths, $100,000 to extend the Welby bike track and $25,000 for a main street revitalisation plan for Mittagong.

The Land and Environment Court appeal challenged the amount of work needed to upgrade four intersections around the site of development, including conditions requiring Fabcot to contribute $185,000 to upgrade Cavendish Street.
