Council says no to $125,000 grant

27 Feb, 2006 08:38 AM
Wingecarribee Shire Council has turned down a $125,000 Black Spot grant to improve the Merrigang/Station Street intersection in Bowral.

The RTA grant was offered in conjunction with funding for Station Street traffic lights.

Proposed work included a right-hand turning bay for northbound vehicles in Merrigang Street, concrete medians in Station Street and a footpath on the western side of Station Street.

Council director of technical services Michael Brearley said if council accepted the grant it would have to provide the $195,000 shortfall on the $320,000 project.

Work would have to be completed by June 30, 2006.

Mr Brearley told councillors he did not believe it would yield significant benefit to justify the proposed expenditure.

He added that the proposed works would require the removal of 14 camellia trees on the western side of Station Street which will affect the amenity of the area.

Cr Duncan Gair said the traffic committee had looked at what improvements could be undertaken for $125,000, without additional expenditure by council.
