WINGECARRIBEE Shire Council has hit back at claims by Gilmore MP Joanna Gash that it is failing to attract enough Federal Government funding.
Mrs Gash launched an outspoken attack last month saying she has received little contact from council during her time in office, making it difficult for her to secure grant monies for the shire.
But councillor David Fairall, who labelled Mrs Gash's address as unwarranted, said at Wednesday night council's meeting that it was wrong for the Gilmore MP to unfairly point the finger.
After talking to a couple of council departments, Cr Fairall said council had actually been successful in securing more than $380,000 in Federal Government funding.
"Regarding the statements our local member has been making, I've asked a couple of our departments what monies we have actually received in grants.
"I've got all the documents here - and this is for Mrs Gash to let her know - we have applied and received the sum of $386,000 from different Government grants on top of what we've raised from the environment levy.
"I just want to let Mrs Gash know that we have asked, we do apply and we have received $386,000, and I have copies of all the details of where that money has gone," he said.
While she enjoys a productive relationship with the two other councils in her electorate, Kiami and Shoalhaven, Mrs Gash is now keen to correct the perceived communication breakdown between her and Wingecarribee.
In her view, Wingecarribee is lagging behind both Kiami and Shoalhaven in its infrastructure and could be doing more to attract assistance packages to the region as opposed to just upping its rates.
She concluded by saying that Wingecarribee needed to become more proactive because the days of simple handouts are long gone.
