Council quizzed on leisure centre funding

29 Oct, 2003 04:31 PM
The district's leisure centre lobbying group has demanded council come clean on its promise to kickstart funding for a centre in the Highlands.

At last year's Wingecarribee Shire Council annual retreat, councillors vowed to link section 94 developer funds to establishing a leisure centre if a rate rise was approved.

The timely call comes on the eve of this year's retreat, with the pools and leisure centre committee urging councillors to honour a commitment that has stalled since May's nine per cent rate hike.

"They have had their special rate increase, they should now commit to funding for leisure centre at this Saturday's council retreat," Wingecarribee Pools and Leisure Centre Committee secretary Charlie Johns said.

"We are not proposing an aquatic centre as was proposed last year at the expense of the three pools.

"We want a leisure centre similar to the one which was recently built in the Wollondilly."

Under the plan, the leisure centre in Mittagong would be a home to a host of indoor sports and could even be used by other sporting groups for training when the weather turned nasty.

The group has even raised the possibility of a bowling alley and other facilities at the centre.

"If it was managed properly, there would be no reason to close any shire pools," Mr Johns said.

"Why can't we be equal to other local government areas and meet the future needs of our children and grandchildren.

"The majority of councillors and council staff have made no effort to honour the promise they made a year ago.

"If they don't make a commitment on Saturday it's time the residents and ratepayers of the shire put their hands up and make their vote count at the March elections."
