Council moves to stop new mining in shire

18 Jul, 2011 12:00 AM

Wingecarribee Council has vowed to stop all future coal seam gas and coal mining applications in the shire.

The council passed a motion at last Wednesday's general meeting to write to the State Government highlighting concerns about the impacts of future mining projects to residents and the environment.

Councillor Larry Whipper brought the motion, saying there was no credible evidence that mining did not have an adverse effect on underground water supplies.

"We do value this place and I've seen first-hand the effects that coal seam gas and long-wall mining have on the environment and communities," he said.

"This motion is part of a process and it reinforces our concerns for the shire."

Mayor Ken Halstead said he did not want mining in the shire.

"We cannot support the rape of our shire by coal and coal seam gas mining," he said.

"This is not a coal mining area. We do not want them in the shire, apart from what's already here.

"There's a huge list of concerns: traffic, noise, dust, to name a few."

The council would request that relevant Ministers reject the renewal applications from Hume Coal for AUTH349 in November 2011 and Leichhardt Resources for PEL469 in April 2012.

It also resolved to form a Community Coal Reference Panel and to take its concerns to the Local Government Association conference.

The shire has been a mining area as long as its been around.

When will the WSC let any type of development into the area that isn't in line with the Johnny come lately nimby mindset?

I moved to the higlands 12 years ago specifically for health reasons assocoated with serious respiratory problems and allergies. I used to be constantly in hosital but I have not been back in since I have moved here. The clean fesh air is something that makes this area quite unique.

I have lived in 3 coal mining areas over the years and left extremely unwell each time. If coal mining comes here....I wil have to leave. How sad for my children and I that will be.
