Wingecarribee Shire Council needs to step up their efforts to promote their disability services within and outside the Shire, according to Acting Disability Discrimination Commissioner Sev Ozdowski.
Commissioner Ozdowski met with Council's General Manager David McGowan earlier this week to debrief the General Manager about current efforts to improve disability services, such as the release of the Federal Government's draft standards for access to buildings, and changes to transport standards under the Disability Discrimination Act.
As well as bringing Council up to date with the latest legislation, council had the opportunity to tell Commissioner Osdowski what council was doing to improve disability access in the Southern Highlands.
And while Commissioner Osdowski was pleased with council's efforts, he felt council needed to step up their promotional efforts to increase awareness of the disability access facilities available in the Shire.
"(Council) gave me a good briefing about what is happening here in this area," Commissioner Osdowski said.
"This council is quite active in implementing their disability plan...(but) I suggested they include a bit more of that information about what they're doing on their website."
Commissioner Ozdowski said providing information about disability services on council's website would attract more tourists to the Southern Highlands.
"Before people using wheelchairs and scooters take holidays, they check web sites, and it's important to have information about disability access on their web sites," he said.
Mr McGowan said his meeting with Commissioner Osdowski was very informative and said council would look at implementing his suggestion.
"It was a good meeting...and it was nice for him (to recognise) we had done something to improve disabled access in our Shire," he said.
"We are very committed (to improving disability access) but we can always do more."
