Costly pathway splits the opinion of council

Costly pathway splits the opinion of council

Wingecarribee Shire councillors literally took sides in a debate at Wednesday’s council meeting about what could be Wingecarribee Shire’s most expensive pathway.

Facing a $225,000 cost blowout on the footpath/cycleway linking Mittagong and Highlands Marketplace along the northern side of the Old Hume Highway, councillors revived the long-running north vs south argument.

Plans to build the footpath on the southern side of the highway were dropped after Moss Vale Master Plan Committee, Mittagong Public School and members of the public demanded the path be built on the northern side.

Director of technical services Michael Brearley told council the cost of the 610- metre stretch of council-funded cycleway had risen to $835,000 because extensive rock excavation was needed to make room for stormwater drainage on the northern side, with the pathway to be built over the top.

At $1370 per metre, the pathway would be shire’s most expensive in terms of cost per metre.

The total cost of the council pathway and installation of traffic signals at Bessemer Street is $1.3 million.
