A French family of four is in three hospitals following a head-on crash on a remote road near Taralga.

Ambulance, police, fire and two rescue helicopters were alerted to the crash west of Wombeyan Caves just before 5 pm on Sunday.

The NRMA CareFlight doctor said two adults and two children were initially trapped in a tourist van which collided with a 4WD whose occupants escaped injury.

Rural Fire Service volunteers extinguished a fire which broke out in the van where the mother and father were trapped and were being treated by the CareFlight doctor and paramedics.
