Cool reception for refugee welcome

28 Feb, 2003 08:17 AM

A Highlands resident called for Wingecarribee Shire Council to abandon its moral support for Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) during Wednesday night's council meeting.

Peter Cunningham from Mittagong said he could not understand why the council would give support to RAR without consulting the community.

"What business has the council in lending its support to declaring the shire as a 'Welcome Shire' for so called refugees?" Mr Cunningham asked.

"This is well out of step for council (and) I call for council to rescind and void the decision made regarding support for RAR and its objectives."

Mr Cunningham said it seemed council was more concerned about the welfare of refugees than people in its own backyard.

He was disappointed the council had not sought ratepayer's opinion on this matter saying it was "undemocratic and invalid".

"They are more concerned for the wellbeing of foreigners with at least questionable backgrounds rather than the wellbeing of struggling Australians," Mr Cunningham said.

"I'm basically sick and tired of do-gooders and the way they influence the media and council - and I'm not alone.

"I'm not against controlled immigration and a lot of people have good intentions.

"But just because one sheep jumps over the fence it doesn't mean they have to jump over the fence."

The Mayor Phil Yeo said the council was not restricted to what they supported and had already voted 10-1 in favour of allowing RAR to use its name as a welcoming shire to refugees who had temporary visas.

Mayor Yeo said to undo this motion it would have to be subject of a re-issued motion raised by a councillor.
