Company has plans for $50m facelift of region

27 Feb, 2002 08:14 AM

Sydney-based developer, Bill Shipton, has been instrumental changing the face of the Highlands for more than 25 years.

Mr Shipton said that the Shipton group was planning $50 million in further developments in the region over the next five years.

In his latest project, The Clubhouse Estate, has brought his city-based ingenuity to create not only a profitable development but a lifestyle opportunity.

"We are always on the lookout for unique opportunities that allow us to offer the market something different," Mr Shipton explained.

With the recent sale of the old Moss Vale clubhouse site, Mr Shipton was able to capitalise on the majestic views overlooking the golf course in providing 12 exclusive homes for potential buyers.

The 12 homes are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2002.

"Here is a place that people can wander over and have a game of golf because it's literally right on the back door step," Mr Shipton continued.

"I think that's what people are looking for these days.

"People are much busier, so instead of spending Saturday morning on the lawn mower, they can spend it on the golf course without leaving the house."

Creating a lifestyle development in the Highlands is nothing new to Mr Shipton and his development staff.

Immediately he compares his latest undertaking with previous projects that the Shipton group has been involved with.

"Burradoo Estate, which we started in 1992/3 from memory, was the first and remains the only community estate in the Highlands," Mr Shipton pointed out.

"It took a little while for people get used to the idea, but from the horse paddock that it was everyone has responded very well to that project."

The Clubhouse Estate has once again brought new wave guidelines to the development.

"We could have built a three story block of flats," Mr Shipton said.

"But that was in keeping with the site or our developing principles.

"Instead we has designed each of the 12 homes to have their own views over the golf course while remaining private and secure.

"We've also kept the country feel of the development by employing different materials like weather boards so that the building keeps within the context of the existing environment."

When asked why Moss Vale was seen as so desirable to such a large developing company like the Shipton Group, Mr Shipton was quick to point out his underlying reasons for the move.

"Moss Vale still remains a country town, whereas places like Bowral have been developed in ways that I personally would not have supported," he explained.

"Some of these other places have been done to death, so with some sensible developments I can see Moss Vale really coming to life."
