Community spirit grows fresh from the garden bed

The environment, health and hip pocket can benefit from growing your own vegetables, says permaculturalist and self-confessed urban farmer Jill Cockram.

Ms Cockram said she believed growing and eating your own seasonal vegetables could re-empower people and provide them with a solution to tough economic times.

The co-ordinator of the Anglicare Community Garden at Moss Vale said it was something anyone could do regardless of whether or not they had a back yard.

“Packaging of fruit and vegetables has a huge impact on the environment while the growing costs of food transportation has resulted in soaring prices,’’ she said.

“But the solutions are simple and far-reaching.

“There is no packaging or transport required for vegies grown in your own garden.

“There is the added health benefit of ensuring vegies from your garden are not genetically modified and have not been treated with chemical pesticides.’’
