Community rallies to aged services fundraiser

30 Jun, 2008 09:03 AM
A flood of community support for the Wingecarribee Community Services Centre appeal has raised almost double the amount of the committee’s fundraising target of $85,000.

The Wingecarribee Community Services Centre committee had banked about $92,000 by Friday and a three-day “lock-in” by 2ST announcer Graeme Day last week has added a further $61,000 to the tally from the month-long appeal.

Committee chairman Peter Hammon said the appeal’s success meant the committee could meet today’s deadline to pay outstanding debts, allowing the Moss Vale centre to open in July as planned.

“It does show that the community is really behind it and has taken ownership of it,” Mr Hammon said.

“The community has got behind it 100 per cent. It proves what a great community we have.”

The centre will provide respite and support services to the elderly and people with disabilities, housing Wingecarribee Adult Day Care, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Advisory Centre, Care Assist (Schizophrenia Fellowship NSW), the Benevolent Society, Volunteering Wingecarribee, and Wingecarribee Food Services (Meals on Wheels).
