Come clean on clean up Australia Day

31 Jan, 2001 10:18 AM
Council is urging local residents to pick up a garbage bag and help keep the Highlands beautiful as part of this year’s Clean Up Australia Day on March 4.

Local organiser for the day, Tim Jessop, said he wants as many people as possible to register with Council beforehand, so resources can be allocated effectively, and to make for another successful day.

“We are urging people to get involved and make it the best day we’ve had,” Mr Jessop said.

“Its success will depend on how many people are here on the day.”

Mr Jessop said although a few areas in the Highlands have been targeted for clean-up, it’s up to the local community to alert Council to which areas need attention.

Residents can nominate a local site for clean up and become a site supervisor on the day through Council.

“It’s all about wanting the best for our own community,” Mr Jessop said.

“A rubbishy looking shire reflects poorly on the community.”

A grant of $1000 was also awarded to Council for the day, to remove car bodies from local reserves and to finance other general labour required on the day.

The annual event is now in its eleventh year, following enormous success since its introduction.

Equivalent of four million ‘wheelie’ bins of waste have been removed during the Australia Day campaign as a result of individual action, from beaches, waterways, roadsides and parklands across the country.

Chairman of Clean Up Australia Ian Kiernan said the Australian community has led the success of Clean Up Australia Day, but the need for local action on the environment was needed, more than ever, now.

“On the 4th of March we are urging people to help us target plastic bags, particularly plastic shopping bags, as they continue to show up in large numbers in landfill and more destructively, in coastal waters where they pose a significant threat to marine life and sea birds,” Mr Kiernan said.

Since 1989, more than five million Australians have lent a hand to personally contribute to a healthier, cleaner environment on Clean Up Australia Day.

There are many ways to be involved in Clean Up Australia Day. The two most effective ways to get involved are to either nominate a site where a clean up is needed and become a Site Supervisor, or fill in a registration form with Clean Up Australia and join the multitude of volunteers on the day.
