Church reaches out to Burma

04 Jun, 2008 09:35 AM
Members of Bowral Seventh Day Adventist Church are reaching out to Burmese people devastated in early May by Cyclone Nargis.

They have stepped in to raise money towards the world-wide Adventist Development and Relief Agency’s (ADRA)effort to assist people ravaged by the cyclone.

Local pastor Tony Moala said each year the church members conducted a door knock appeal with about $2000 collected in the last fund raising effort.

“It is part of our Christian belief that we should be mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves,’’ he said.

“We take part in a variety of fund raising projects throughout each year and are generous with our individual donations.

“The most recent fund raising project, conducted in May, saw about 25 church members pick olives for a day and donate their pay towards the ADRA fund.

“The effort contributed more than $1000 to people in need.”

The ADRA network collectively has donated US$265,500 to provide immediate disaster relief, food assistance and medical supplies to communities in the hard-hit Irrawaddy Delta region.
