Chambers disagree on leisure centre site

29 Jun, 2005 08:14 AM
Moss Vale and Mittagong Chambers of Commerce have weighed-in on opposite sides of the debate over Wingecarribee Shire's proposed leisure centre.

While the Mittagong Chamber is lobbying for the Mittagong site, the Moss Vale Chamber has taken up the case for the Eridge Park site.

Mittagong Chamber of Commerce president Charlie Johns this week expressed concerns about the possibility of a leisure centre being built at Eridge Park.

Mr Johns said in 15 years' time, the Southern Highlands would have more than 55,000 residents, equally distributed north and south.

"There would be a need for two major facilities at that time and building one in the Burradoo area would be very poor vision by council," he said.

"Residents should consider that if the location was Eridge Park, it could lead to some councillors demanding the closure of Moss Vale Pool.

"Mittagong Pool has to be replaced, so why not build it as part of a leisure centre now and build a facility in the south when the population warrants it."

But Moss Vale Chamber of Commerce members this week said it would be "morally wrong" to locate the leisure centre at Mittagong, especially if it meant closure of swimming pools elsewhere in the shire.

"My opinion is if Mittagong gets (the leisure centre), you may as well say most of the rate money is going to Mittagong," said Moss Vale Chamber president Geoff Hosey.

"We need to get something like this in Moss Vale. We are in the centre of the shire."

Mr Hosey said that a leisure centre at Eridge Park would be closer to the centre of the shire and more accessible for all residents.

However, he added that wherever the leisure centre was to be built, council should act quickly and borrow money if necessary, to get the project underway before costs rose further.
