Central is given the green light

24 Feb, 2006 08:50 AM
A deferred vote and the timely arrival of Cr Sara Murray ensured that the controversial Mittagong Central development would be passed in Wingecarribee Shire Council's meeting on Wednesday.

The mixed residential, commercial and retail development was passed by one vote, despite calls by Deputy Mayor Nick Campbell-Jones to reject the building because of size and heritage issues.

"Mittagong Central is three metres higher than any other building in Mittagong. To say that it will not monster heritage buildings in the precinct I just don't understand," said Cr Campbell-Jones.

Cr Penny Graham, Cr May King, Cr Malcolm Murray and Mayor Gordon Lewis supported Cr Campbell-Jones, arguing that while the mixed-use concept was good, the site at the corner of Station and Regent Streets was too small.

But Cr Duncan Gair moved an amendment that the development be approved.
