There’s absolutely no need to go to Sydney or the coast to celebrate New Year’s Eve when there’s a host of functions and events happening locally.

With the threat of bushfires still dangerously prevalent in south and western Sydney, revellers are better advised to miss the Sydney fireworks spectacular and instead party on in the Southern Highlands.

There are plenty of options tonight, ranging from a good song and dance at Bowral’s Royal Hotel (where there will be a DJ) to the traditional Bundanoon New Year’s Eve Dance.

Movie buffs are also invited to attend a special screening of The Lord of the Rings at the Empire Cinema, with proceeds being directed to Welby Garden Centre’s special education program.

The Briars

Count down 2001 in one of the Highlands landmarks. The restaurant will be open till 9.30pm.

Bundanoon New Year’s Eve Dance

The years may change but the dance is the same. Held at the Bundanoon Memorial Hall, the New Year will be brought in by the tune of Allan Ford playing live.

Starting at 8pm and finishing at 1am 2002 the BYO supper and dance the Bundanoon memorial dance costs $12 with supper included.

Empire Cinema, Bowral

Charity showing of Lord of the Rings with all proceeds going to Welby Garden Centre. Tickets cost $20.

Grand Bar & Brasserie, Bowral

Wild Women and Crazy men are the order of the evening with a local DJ plying his trade till late.
