A six-year-campaign by the Gibbergunyah Action Group (GAG) to save open space between Bowral and Mittagong will come a head at Wingecarribee Shire Council’s meeting on November 28.
Wingecarribee Shire Council last week deferred a decision on rezoning Gibbergunyah as a future residential development site after GAG spokeswoman Tracey Cremming appealed to take the matter to a vote of all 12 councillors.
Council has identified the site bounded by John Street, Mittagong, Gib Gate School, and the boundary of the new Gibraltar Aged Care Complex as a possible site for up to 160 new homes.
But GAG members have lobbied Wingecarribee Shire Council to retain the last piece of land separating Mittagong from Bowral.
"Wingecarribee Shire Council has always stated and, up until now, been committed to, retaining a clear buffer between the towns to maintain the unique village character of the Southern Highlands towns," GAG member Annette Ameneiro said.
"In short, we oppose one continuous urban sprawl."
