 Calling all good folk

Calling all good folk

13 Jan, 2006 09:11 AM
Bowral resident John Hall is hoping to bring his lifelong passion for acoustic roots, blues and folk music to the Southern Highlands, with a new music club centred around the genres.

Mr Hall, who moved to Bowral from Vancouver Island, Canada a year ago said he had been fascinated by music since he was very young.

"I'd originally lived in Britain when skiffle, folk and rock n'roll was taking off," he said.

"I was particularly into Bob Dylan and the 60s folk revival. I then lived in North America for 16 years where I became involved in country blues from the Mississippi and Appalachian mountain music."

"I've found them all to be very honest, non-commercial forms of music."

Mr Hall, who plays guitar and recorded an album with Rick Van Crugel, said there had been a thriving folk scene in Vancouver Island and would like to develop something similar in the Southern Highlands.

"Vancouver Island had a very strong folk scene, because, after all it is the home of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young," he said.

"There were 11 folk clubs on the Island, which had a population of 500,000 or less.

"They would all pull in audiences of around 200 people."

Mr Hall said he was hoping to start a performance evening for his folk club.
