According to Mr Barnsley, he decided to act after attending a Moss Vale Chamber of Commerce meeting, which discussed Moss Vale's ongoing vandalism problems.
"I was at a Chamber of Commerce meeting in which the spate of graffiti on Moss Vale businesses was discussed," Mr Barnsley said.
"A lot of those present were resigned to the fact that nothing could be done. I thought 'Stuff it. I'll do something.'
"So I went and saw the manager of Bunnings in Moss Vale, Gordon Coulter, and said, ‘If I paint the graffiti off the businesses, will you supply the paint?'
"He agreed and I went to work."
Mr Barnsley said he began work at his wife's business - Kathy Barnsley Architects - and worked his way down the main street of Moss Vale.
"I scraped a bit of paint off each building so we could match the paint as best we could," he said.
"I then spent two days painting out the graffiti on the affected businesses.
"I finally finished up at the Commonwealth Bank in the centre of town."
