Buses to replace axed rail services

28 Mar, 2005 07:26 AM
Buses will replace weekend Moss Vale-Bundanoon rail services and weekday Goulburn-Moss Vale services to be axed under the new City Rail timetable, Minister for Transport John Watkins said last week.

But Mr Watkins was unable to confirm whether buses would be provided to replace weekend services between Moss Vale and Goulburn.

Mr Watkins met the Member for Southern Highlands Peta Seaton, the Mayors of Wingecarribee and Wollondilly and representatives of the Southern Highlands Rail Users Group on Thursday to discuss the draft Southern Highlands timetable.

The timetable will include extra weekday services between Moss Vale and Campbelltown, but cut some services between Moss Vale and Goulburn.

Rail services which previously terminated at Bundanoon will now terminate at Moss Vale due to a signal box closure.

Following the meeting at State Parliament, Mr Watkins said buses would replace the changed weekday services between Moss Vale and Goulburn.

Minibus links will replace weekend trains between Moss Vale and Bundanoon.

"RailCorp is now reviewing and assessing the feedback from the formal consultation on the draft timetable for Southern Highlands diesel services," said Mr Watkins.

"There has been some concern about the changes to services - particularly from residents on the southern parts of the line.

"I'm hopeful the new bus service will ease some of these concerns and I'll be keeping a close watch on how the new service is received and patronised."

Mr Watkins said he was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with SHRUG and local Mayors.

"SHRUG has advocated strongly for buses to replace changed train services between Moss Vale and Goulburn and I was pleased to inform them that will happen," he said.

SHRUG president Dell Dempster, who represented the group with SHRUG secretary Serge Crismale, said she was pleased that the Minister was aware of the group's concerns and had prepared a response.
