Visiting teams came from as far as Young and Sydney, filling both of the bowling greens on Sunday morning.
A highlight of the day was the attendance of the president of the Royal NSW Bowling Association, John Archer.
Other dignitaries present included state councillor Kevin Moore, the presidents of both the Southern Tablelands Women’s and Men’s Districts, Val McIlveen and David Missingham, Bowls NSW match committee member John Long and district secretary Steve Laker.
Bundanoon Bowling Club president Peter Kellond was the host for the day.
Bowral Bowling Club president Gordon Lewis congratulated members on their achievement of saving the club from the liquidation that seemed imminent six years ago.
Mr Lewis was a councillor when an interest-free council loan was negotiated for the club.
“It was the forthright and confident manner in which the approach was made which influenced our decision”, Mr Lewis said.
Mr Archer commented on the improvements that had been made to the club since he last visited as a member of Belmore Bowling Club 20 years ago.
He congratulated the Bundanoon Club on adopting a total-community focus, rather than trying to exist as purely a bowling club.
“All clubs must try to offer something for all sections of their local community if they are to succeed in today’s economic conditions”, Mr Archer said.
The original club, then known as Bundanoon Park Bowling Club, was formed in 1949 as part of what was then Terry’s Royal Park golf links, at the corner of Erith and Hill Streets.
It moved to the current site in the town’s central sporting precinct in 1956. Further clubhouse improvements were carried out, in particular the new auditorium which was added in 1977.
Mr Kellond said he was proud of the way members and the Bundanoon community had rallied to the “save the club” cause, so that it was now on a sound financial footing, with a growing membership.
The bowls day was the first event of the club’s six-week anniversary program.
Anniversary events will continue with a September Back To Bundanoon day and a community dinner on September 19.
