Brigadoon atttracts 20,000

17 Apr, 2003 06:57 AM
The tartan army was 20,000 strong when Bundanoon became Brigadoon on Saturday.

Crowds flocked from everywhere to the Highland gathering to celebrate Scottish heritage by enjoying many of the 170 stalls and the high-quality entertainment put together by the Brigadoon committee.

Organiser Alaistair Saunders said it was probably the best Brigadoon he had ever seen.

"The crowd went from nothing to being enormous," Mr Saunders said. "I don't think I have ever seen that many people.

"Seventy coaches full of people arrived plus the Southern Aurora, which dropped off 170 visitors."

Mr Saunders said some of the highlights of Brigadoon were the pipe bands, dancers, singers and the athletes.

"To have 21 pipe bands was incredible they put on a great show," he said.

"The Scottish Country Dancing was also a great performance with 14 sets of eight dancers on the oval. I have never seen that before.

"The Sing Australia Choir sung beautifully but the thing that surprised me was the young athlete that set a Brigadoon record by lifting the Bundanoon Stones of Manhood.

"The tartan warrior lifted four stones ranging from 115 to 165 kilograms on to barrels that were seven inches higher than last year in 21.5 seconds, it was this performance that really was the highpoint for the crowd."

Mr Saunders said everyone at the Highlands gathering was there for one reason - fun.

"Everyone had fun kids and adults alike," he said.

"Children had a ball with all the games set up for them and the most important thing is everyone went home happy.

Mr Saunders said the day went off without a hitch and thanked the committee, who he said accomplished "an absolutely great feat".

"Brigadoon started in 1978 with 1000 visitors and seven pipe bands and now look at it," he said.

"Judging by this year's result this festival will keep going and continue to live up to its reputation of being the premier Highland gathering in NSW if not the southern hemisphere."
