Bowral gun dealer pleads not guilty

03 Feb, 2010 10:49 AM
THE Bowral gun dealer who is facing 101 firearms charges pleaded not guilty to all charges in Moss Vale Local Court on Monday.

Robert Irving, of Queen Street, Bowral, had 65 guns seized and his firearms dealing licence suspended when police targeting outlaw motorcycle gangs raided his home on November 13 last year.

During the raid 47 rifles, one shotgun, 10 pistols, seven revolvers and an amount of ammunition was taken by police.

Strike Force Raptor officers visited the 63-year-old’s home following the arrest of alleged Sutton Forest Fourth Reich Bikie member Shane Palk for multiple firearm and drug offences in late October.

Mr Irving’s personal firearms licence was also suspended but was returned in January this year. He is also appealing the suspension of his dealing licence.

Originally from England, the Bowral Pistol Club member has captained the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia national service rifle team for five years and represented the country as recently as January.

He won two gold and one silver medal at the New Zealand championships in the military and service rifle disciplines.

Among the 101 firearms offences including deception and theft Mr Irving faces 95 counts of failing to record details of receipts, two counts of theft, three counts of failing to make a quarterly return and one count of making a false entry in his records.

The two larceny charges are for a Fazackerly MK2K8 firearm receiver, valued at $100, stolen between July 26, 2005, and November 11, 2009, and a .303 rifle, valued at $300, stolen between August 23, 2006, and December 18, 2008, police will allege.

The failing to record details of receipts offences date from April 13, 2008, to November 6, 2009.

Mr Irving did not appear in court and was represented by an agent for his solicitor Sutherland-based lawyer Stephen Mainstone.

He will re-appear to fix a hearing date on April 6.

The State Crime Command’s Gangs Squad established Strike Force Raptor to target outlaw motorcycle gangs.

* SHANE PALK, who was arrested after police seized 25 firearms along with various weapons, is due to appear at Moss Vale Local Court on March 9.

Police said they seized detonators, a hand grenade, throwing knives and an anti-tank mine plus a quantity of cannabis at his Sutton Forrest address on October 28 last year.

The 45-year-old alleged Fourth Reich Bikie member faces 18 charges, including 10 firearms offences and possession of an unauthorised poker machine.
