Bowling club must be demolished: historian

Local historians have praised council's decision to turn the Alexandra Square site in Mittagong into a recreation reserve.

Wingecarribee Shire councillors voted last Wednesday to acknowledge the advice of the Attorney General that Alexandra Square can only be used for public recreation.

Alexandra Square, the site of the now defunct Mittagong Bowling Club, has been under the Wingecarribee Shire Council microscope for some time. They have been considering a number of options for the site and have received more than 130 expressions of interest from the public.

But recent research brought to light by Mittagong historians Leah Day and Tim McCartney has revealed the site should have never been developed, prompting Ms Day to call for its restoration to parkland.
