Border controls start at Bowral claims reader

30 Sep, 2002 08:18 AM

Sir,

Recent correspondence by local members of the pro-illegal immigrant movement has been a source of much amusement to me.

They would have us believe that they are all for welcoming illegal immigrants into the Highlands, however their actions are nothing short of hypocrisy.

One only has to walk down the main street of Bowral on a Friday or Saturday night to find glaring examples of this.

Restaraunts owned and operated by ethnic members of our community are conspicuously empty, while overpriced restaraunts owned and operated by wealthy whites who serve psuedo-asian cuisine are doing a roaring trade.

If local bleeding hearts are unwilling to patronise the establishments of legal ethnic residents of the Southern Highlands, the concept that they genuinely care about the fate of illegal immigrants is absurd.

Bowral, like many wealthy suburbs of Sydney, has long practiced an unspoken policy of economic border protection.

Undesirables (such as residents of the outer villages) are discouraged from invading the town via ridiculous property prices, and overpriced cups of coffee.

If the floodgates were open tomorrow, there is no way known that refugees would be able to reside in wealthy white enclaves such as Bowral.

More likely, working class people in areas such as Greenacre and Campbelltown would be forced to begrudgingly welcome them, and their associated problems with open arms.

Hopefully this letter will serve as a much-needed dose of reality for the pro-illegal immigrant movement.
