Awareness training over guide dogs

20 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
WOLLONDILLY Shire Council wants to work with businesses and tourism operators to hold presentations to raise awareness about Guide Dogs being legally allowed to enter cafes, restaurants, hotels and clubs.

The Council recently received information that has highlighted confusion surrounding legislative requirements, with some believing it is illegal to have any animal in areas where people consume food.

In fact, it is against the law to refuse a guide dog entry to a public premises.

The Wollondilly Disability Access Advisory Committee is proactive in raising awareness about all access issues for people that have a disability.

The theme for the 2009 International Day of People with a disAbility celebration included a presentation facilitated by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. The activities were organised for attendees to experience some of the day-to-day issues faced by a person who has vision impairment.

The council's Ageing and Disability Community Project Officer, Gay Hardwick, and the disability awareness committee will work in partnership with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT to facilitate a range of events to provide awareness and training about appropriate guide dog etiquette.

If you are interested in information or registering your interest in this training, please contact the council on 4677 1150.

One would think if you are running a business in this market, that you would be across the risks of business, i.e. OHS food safety etc.

This would include these sort of requirements under the legislation.

I can’t see why our rates should be used to fund such basic requirements of running a business such as this.

The funds, I’m sure, would be better spent actually improving council facilities.
